Table of Contents

GETTING THERE

  • CAMP 1 MOORABACK CAMPGROUND
  • Zero trip meter in the centre of Walcha township (we did ours at the Walcha cafe on the right after the bridge)
  • Approx 66kms further long Oxley highway you will see a left turn called kangaroo Flat Road
  • Approx 20kms along this road, turn right onto Mooraback Road
  • Follow this until you come to our first campsite known as Mooraback Campground
  • CAMP 2 BRUSHY MOUNTAIN CAMPGROUND
  • Follow along Mooraback road to an intersection
  • The left is Youdales Hut (A permit is required as the is a steep heavily controlled 4wd track) https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/camping-and-accommodation/campgrounds/youdales-hut-campground-picnic-area
  • Follow right and continue along Racecourse trail for 16.5kms and see Brushy Mountain Campground on the left
  • When finished, we took Inlet Road via Hastings Forest Way, coming back out on to Oxley Highway

FACILITES

Both camp grounds offer

  • Undercover picnic areas
  • Toilets
  • BBQ pits
  • Well maintained for camping

WHAT TO BRING

  • Fuel, make sure you have enough (Long Flat or Walcha are the closest)
  • Warm Clothing
  • Water and food
  • Snorkel or water bra ( creek crossing can get deep after rain)
  • GPS or App Navigation ( GAIA or Hema we prefer using)
  • Phone service along Racecourse was intermittent at best

PLEASE NOTE

  • Keep an eye out for Adventure motorcycle riders as the use these roads as well
  • Racecourse Trail is a fun medium grade trail, occasional use of low range may be needed for some steep hills and descents
  • Most roads are well maintained but can become tricky in the wet, especially if towing a camper
  • While most roads would be ok in the dry for 2wd vehicles we suggest only towing with a 4×4
  • While there are a heap of trails left and right we have not travelled on all of them
